More sedate alternatives include 18th-century Cottesbrooke Hall (01604 505808) and Althorp House (01604 770107; July-August), the latter being the Spencer family estate, home to Princess Diana’s island grave and a museum. The Kilworth House Hotel (01858 881939), a 10-minute drive away, also has an excellent outdoor theatre in a beautiful wooded glade close to the lake in the grounds of the house.
