Skoolie Stays is an icon of the American road, lovingly converted into luxurious accommodation in Sussex. It offers up to 4 guests a chance to stay in fantastically unusual accommodation in a beautiful part of West Sussex close to the South Downs National Park.
The bus was inspired by the owners' 14,000 mile, year-long family road trip across America in a similar Skoolie. They fell in love with bus life and, when it came time to return to the UK, the whole family agreed - they had to ship one back to the UK.
The Skoolie Stays bus is a product of the knowledge and skills they developed over their year away, full of clever ideas and hand-built, design-led decor. Every element has been thought out in detail to maximise space, comfort, freedom, and fun. You will find lots of original features, repurposed and reimagined furniture, and top-of-the-range fixtures and fittings that help to make off-grid living comfortable, practical, and environmentally friendly.
Skoolie Stays comfortably sleeps up to 4 people in a king-size bed (2 guests) and 6ft murphy-style bunks (2 guests) that fold away when not in use. The kitchen provides plenty of space to cook and the American-style diner area, complete with the original bus seats and incorporates an old teak table from a local secondary school, is the perfect place for a meal. Oak herringbone floors, leather sofa, and a clean-burning log stove make the lounge area feel cosy and luxurious and the fully-tiled bathroom offers lovely hot showers.
When the sun goes down, step out onto the deck to watch the stars or warm up at the outdoor firepit.
The Skoolie is based at Thakeham. It has great access to the South Downs Way, the coast, and villages such as Thakeham, Storrington and Amberley, where you can find lovely pubs, tea-rooms, shops and restaurants. There is also the opportunity to visit the bustling cities of Brighton and Worthing, or the the incredible castle at Arundel.

Booking Policy
- Guests can arrive any time from 2pm on the day of arrival and must check out before 11am on their day of departure.
- Cars are to be left in designated parking area.
- Pets are not allowed on the site.
- Bed linen and towels are provided for all guests - beds are made up as per booking
- Water is provided for showers, drinking and cooking
- Firewood is provided for bookings in low season (1st October - 31st March) .
- We ask you to respect our neighbours and refrain from music or excessive noise between 22:00 and 08:00.
- Our 'murphy' bunks are for people of maximum height 6ft.
- There is a 1.5m drop from our Skoolie outdoor deck. Children must be monitored.
- The Skoolie is off-grid so there are no standard plug points - USB ports and 12v cigarette lighter sockets are available.
- We are based on working farmland. Guests must stick to the field and public rights of way.
- Disposable barbecues are not allowed. We provide a grill rack for the firepit.
Cancellation Policy
We are always happy to try and help you amend your booking to another date, subject to availability and our standard Terms and Conditions. If you do want to cancel your booking dates, please note that deposits are non-refundable and that cancellations within 8 weeks of your arrival date will also be subject to a charge charge equal to the full booking amount.
